IKEA Catalog

75% of the Photos are CGI 3d models in IKEA Catalog.

Martin Enthed and his team work in one of the many IKEA companies, IKEA Communications AB. “When it comes to products,” explains Martin, “IKEA of Sweden designs and develops the product range. The global marketing and communication department decides what communication about the range is important to reach the consumers. We then create concepts and communication ideas, which we produce in different ways. We do the assembly instructions you all know so well! We create product images, labels, the IKEA catalogue, the IKEA.com website, prints for in-package and on-package etc. We do most of the global communication for IKEA. All the communication we create and produce should ultimately help consumers to understand how IKEA can help them create a better everyday life.”

In the summer of 2004, IKEA decided to change the way they produced their product images. They made the first tentative moves toward CG rendered, rather than photographic, images. “We made 8 or 10 quite bad product visualisations by today’s standards,” says Martin, “but it sparked something and we continued to work at it. In the fall of 2006 we first showed a product in the catalogue. The first CG piece of furniture was a chair called “Bertil”.

The IKEA team didn’t feel there was anything wrong with traditional photography, quality-wise. Like any company, they just wanted to make things easier for the team to work on - to make the process simpler, cheaper and faster. With traditional photography, you need to have prototype furniture being built in different parts of the world shipped over so it can be photographed. Everything needs to be there on time and it can be logistically difficult, expensive and not that environmental. Then if there are changes everything needs to be re-shot. With CG re-creations of pieces, it removes a lot of this difficulty. However to start with, Martin says, “There was no vision initially to create entire rooms in CG, like we do now. We just wanted to create the individual pieces - the ones you see on white backgrounds on the web.”

Making the Transition

When IKEA started to look at creating more than product images in 3D a few years ago, they already had a set look and feel for IKEA pictures. They wanted to keep the sense of reality and the feel of a "lived in" environment when moving over to digital workflow. They didn’t want their customers to see or even more importantly feel any difference. Says Martin, “We understand how important the knowledge of home furnishing is. How homes look, how homes feel, and so on. The experienced photographers at IKEA have been working with the interior designers on re-creating this feel for fifteen to twenty years, some of them. We needed to translate that knowledge over to the 3D artists who were tech-savvy but in some cases coming directly from school. We needed them to understand the kind of feel we wanted the images to convey. It was very hard at the beginning.”

LG G Watch R Android Smart Watch

So far the best looking smart watch.

We really dislike whole idea of a smart watch. What is the point, terrible battery life. If you need something smart - there is always phone in a pocket. Saying all that LG has announced a new, round Android Wear smart watch with a conventional men’s watch design.

And it looks very good.

The Watch R is waterproof to IP67 standards, or 1m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, so designed to survive a rain shower. It is also powered by the same 1.2GHz processor as the original G Watch, connecting to an Android smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, and has a similar sized battery, meaning that battery life should be at least one full day of usage.

Frendzy is both proud of its split personality and not ashamed of how awful it looks. Examples of this duality of purpose begin at the exterior. The “work” side features a sliding door, while the “family” side has conventional doors. A modular interior allows for storage or a comfy bench seat in the rear.

Taku Tanku mobile shelter

Bicycle towable floating mobile shelter made from rainwater tanks.

New York-based architects Stereotank in collaboration with Japanese designer Takahiro Fukuda created a mobile shelter made from two 3,000 liter water tanks.

Taku Tanku is very light. Carried by one or two persons or by a bicycle, by a car or potentially even by a boat, Taku Tanku is made out of recycled water tanks and can travel through many landscapes to serve as companion and shelter.

iControl

iControl is the Missing piece in Apple’s HomeKit.

Designer Peter Zigich, has come up with device that controls Smart Home using upcoming Apple’s HomeKit. It’s a cross between a universal remote control and an iDevice with lots of connectivity options. He calls this device iControl.
At Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference HomeKit, a suite of tools for controlling devices such as lights, locks, garage doors, alarms, thermostats and more using iOS device was announced.

iControl, concept designed by Peter Zigich. Device that controls Smart Home using Apple’s HomeKit. Cross between universal remote control and iDevice. iControl 3d concept by Peter Zigich

Current iOS devices (iPhone & iPad), are not well suited for Apples HomeKit & Home Automation for a number of key reasons:
  • The lack of ZigBee, Z-Wave, IR prevents compatibility with hundreds of existing Home Automation devices.

  • Many members of a household still do not own their iOS device (small children, grandparents, ……).

  • Limited battery life for Home Automation.

A crucial hardware piece that is missing in the Apple Home Automation ecosystem, is a device / hub that would be in the centre of the living room, to control “Smart Home”. The simplest way to describe this gizmo is that it is a cross between a universal remote control and an iPod Touch with lots of connectivity options and sensors built into it.

Features:

  • metal body

  • 4” touch screen

  • Touch ID

  • Connectivity – Bluetooth BLE, WiFi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, IR infrared

  • Front & back camera

  • Siri, AirPlay, AirPlay Mirroring. Facetime, VoIP phone….

  • Significantly larger battery (possible solar or wireless charging)

  • Built in sensors to assist Smart devices (motion, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, light etc).

IXION windowless jet

IXION windowless jet with 360 degree panoramic views and solar panels.

International agency Technicon Design has created a concept for a private jet that replaces windows with screens. Technicon Design has a lot of experience working in the commercial aviation sector.

IXION windowless jet by Technicon Design, cool-3d-concept IXION windowless jet by Technicon Design.

IXION’s windowless jet uses external cameras to capture a full 360-degree panoramic view of the exterior of the plane, which is then adjusted for perspective and displayed on the cabin’s interior display panels that cover most of the cabin. This gives the passenger the illusion of transparency, albeit a 2-dimensional one. The displays could also be customized to show any other animated wallpaper you so chose, such as a beach scene or outer space. In order to drive low voltage systems on-board, a series of amorphous solar panels are placed on the upper front half of the exterior

"The ethos of the project is simple, to challenge current thinking, and propose something a little different, but not just a fantasy," said Technicon design director Gareth Davies. "It has to be credible and relevant, yet provoke discussion."
"We quickly settled on the controversial yet interesting idea of removing the windows from the cabin and using existing or very near future technology to display the exterior environment to the inside surfaces of the cabin via external cameras."

The Apple iPro computer is a very nice looking concept that looks just like a Lenovo Yoga Tablet, with that circular tube at the bottom. It’s supposed to be a combo between a Mac Pro and an iMac. It features a glass OLED display with unibody design and relies on a flexible architecture. The unibody takes the shape of a tube and components can be lined up inside in order to fit the user’s needs.
